Some days you are just plain happy…

Last few days were quite boring. Sales jobs have their ups and downs. And the most major down is no sale. People said it was recession but I feel the product I was selling was overpriced. And that was just proved today.

Yesterday evening I received a mail from my boss, giving details about the new prices. I was amazed myself. Because for the past few months; even I was feeling difficult selling with price over the top. I had asked them to reduce it many a time but it’s management decision and no one would hear out the quiet simple girl who just comes in , does her work and leaves. But finally it got into their brains that the customer wants the best for the price offered. The customer feels ok if it is expensive as it will make him feel like the Crème’ de’ la crème’ but at least should be worth what was being spent. You can’t fool the customer.

So the new prices are highly reduced. And I have just sent a few mails since morning and the enquiries are overwhelming. I didn’t even get time for my coffee break. I like it this way. I am expecting good sales this month, as last few months were a bit dull with the market conditions and the overpriced product.

What is important here that the management finally understood the funda that you can make more (money) with less (price). That is what most entrepreneurs are doing now. By reducing the price they are actually selling goods worth more than they would have with higher prices.

But one major issue that was caught on camera by the journalists is that with the reducing price they also tend to decrease the portion size (printed in small unreadable font). Even major companies are doing this to average out their losses. Not every customer looks at how many grams the biscuit weighs (well I do and also look at the expiry date and the calorific value), so it is easier for them to reduce 50gms or so and advertise it as a special discounted rate for the same product, which will sell twice as faster.

Somehow all of us are lured towards things which sound cheap, even if we don’t use that brand or even the product itself. If it sounds cheap it gets the attention. ‘Free’ is another main pocket killer. Men and women both equally tend to checkout if something free is being given with any product. Buy 2 get 1 free and we think oh wow I’m saving so much. Ending up buying so many things we don’t even need. Funny how we just want to grab the last few packs of soaps when they are 50 % off. The only people making money is the soap company. They are having twice the sale. So you even know that brand?

And please anyone explain free shampoo with tea. What is the connection? If it was shampoo with soap I would have understood but tea? Why… Maybe they want to say have a bath and then only enjoy the tea..?

P.S – i figured it out. if no one comes up with the right answer.. i’ll let out the secret.

    Very weird idea indeed.. 😀
    Unless of course… you like to imagine how your hair would look and smell after the bath, as you have your cup of tea.. 😀

    I can totally relate to your sales rant. All the best for this months sales figures !!

    U dont understand the connection between tea and shampoo?? Neither do I. Probably, its like, You drink tea, you become fresh. You take bath applying shampoo, you become fresh. Duh !!!

    “Free shampoo with tea”- Guess both the products are owned by the same company. And maybe one of them isnt selling as well as the other, so woah give away one free with another and yet make a profit. Or the just want customer to be more alert after drinking the tea of the shampoo fragnance.

    That said, the number of ek pe ek free banners are definitely on rise in malls and so are the discount signs.

    now this is quite logically possible.. one is not selling anyway so why not finish it off with another one.. 🙂

    So what products do you sell :).Tea and shampoo..well a friend of mine said she apllies tea dust for her hair,its good for hair is her discovery. May be some scientist like that was in their marketing dept. It is logical if both products r by the same company either to sell old stock or to introduce their new tea brand they may do this gimmick.

    well i sure don’t sell tea or shampoo.. 🙂
    yes actually used tea leaves are added in hair packs with henna to improve colour and moisture. so maybe you’re right with that concept.

    wonder what connection shampoo and tea has got..

    Maybe after having a shampoo bath we tend to be very sleepy .. so a tea would help..hehe a crap logic 😀

    Somehow, even after realizing all the funda behind marketing, I end up going to a wholesale store to get two things in bulk and pick up 10 grinning smugly that I’ve swooped on awesome deals, and then come out with a fat bill trying to do the math to convince myself that I did indeed save! 🙂 So, I’m eagerly awaiting some gyan from you on such tea and shampoo deals!

    Nice..I guess I would come under the smart shopper then. I hardly ever go for sales gimmicks like buy 2 get 1 free or pick products which have free stuff tagged to them.

    I would never ever be able to take up a marketing job! So, what do you sell? What is the secret of marketing something you don’t believe in yourself?

    Shampoo with tea. I suppose it is manufactured by the same parent company. So, push products that don’t move with products that might?! Just throwing a stone here.

    great to hear that we still have sensible shoppers.. 🙂

    marketing a product you don’t believe in is really hard. but the answer is simple.. good acting.

    see you can’t force someone to buy something they don’t want. you can’t stop someone who wants it no matter what. i just work on the confused ones.. 😉

    i too would have prefered to be convinced before convincing, but it is more challenging and fun this way..

    Good one.The only logical answer seems to be……shampoo stocks need to be cleared before new stocks with reduced qty hits the market
